British Airways: the direct line to London

No airline flies more people between the U.S. and London. Here is how its cabins, fares and two London airports work — and how to avoid paying more than you should.

Three London airports, three purposes

Most U.S. flights land at Heathrow Terminal 5, the airline's purpose-built home with the easiest onward connections.

Gatwick handles a handful of U.S. leisure routes and many holiday flights; London City is for short business hops.

Four cabins with very British names

British Airways uses its own cabin names on long-haul flights. Club Suite — the newer business seat with a door — is now on most but not all aircraft.

Avios, and status based on what you spend

The programme formerly known as Executive Club was renamed in 2025. You earn Avios to spend on flights and upgrades, and Tier Points — now linked to how much you spend — to climb the status ladder. Avios can also be moved to Qatar Airways, Iberia and Finnair.

Six tips for cheaper British Airways fares

01

Decide on bags first

Basic fares look cheapest but exclude checked luggage. Compare with Standard before booking.

02

Fly into London, out of elsewhere

Open-jaw tickets — arriving in London, returning from Paris or Rome — can be good value.

03

Mind the departure tax

The UK charges a heavy tax on long-haul flights leaving Britain. Returning from another country can save money.

04

Compare with American

The two airlines share revenue across the Atlantic, but prices on the same flight can differ.

05

Book summer early

June to August London fares rise quickly. Three to six months ahead is the usual sweet spot.

06

Ask about phone-only fares

Our agents can sometimes access fares that do not appear online.
