Status measured in dollars spent

SkyMiles never expire. Elite status is called Medallion and is earned through spending on Delta and its partners rather than miles flown, so a few expensive trips count for more than many cheap ones.

Medallion thresholds are set by Delta and can change each year.

Six tips for cheaper Delta fares

  1. 01

    Compare Basic with Classic

    Basic is cheapest, but it earns fewer miles and limits changes. On trips that might move, Classic is the safer buy.

    Skip Atlanta if you can

    Detroit and Minneapolis often have shorter connections and less congestion on east–west trips.

  3. 03

    Book partners on one ticket

    Air France, KLM and Virgin Atlantic flights can be combined with Delta, often at the same price.

    Fly midweek

    Tuesday and Wednesday departures are usually the cheapest on business-heavy Delta routes.

  5. 05

    Check both New York airports

    Delta is big at both JFK and LaGuardia. Domestic fares can differ noticeably between them.
