United reaches more international destinations than any other U.S. airline. Here is how its network, cabins and fare rules really work — so you pay for what you need and nothing else.
United splits its flying across seven mainland hubs. Each one points in a different direction, and picking the right one can save hours on a connection.
Newark and Washington Dulles face Europe, San Francisco and Los Angeles face Asia and the Pacific, Houston looks south to Latin America, and Chicago and Denver stitch the country together.
Fares are indicative one-way economy prices and change with dates and availability. Click a route for live prices.
United has leaned harder into international flying than its U.S. rivals, and it shows in the fleet. Most long-haul routes are flown by Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 777s with lie-flat Polaris seats up front.
The gap between United fares is mostly about bags, seats and flexibility. Read the first row carefully — Basic Economy is where most surprises happen.
On Basic Economy within the U.S., a full-size bag brought to the gate is checked for a fee. Long-haul Basic Economy tickets usually do include a carry-on.
MileagePlus is free to join and its miles have no expiry date, which makes it forgiving for occasional flyers. Status is called Premier, and the higher levels add free Economy Plus seats, extra checked bags and upgrades.
Premier qualification rules are set by United and reviewed every year.
If you need a carry-on, standard Economy is often cheaper than Basic Economy plus a gate-check fee.
United flies mostly from Newark. Compare it with fares into JFK and LaGuardia on the same dates.
For coast-to-coast trips a Denver or Chicago connection is frequently well below the nonstop price.
Transatlantic and transpacific fares are usually best two to six months ahead.
Lufthansa, ANA, Air Canada and others can be combined with United on a single ticket.
Most U.S. bookings made a week or more before departure can be cancelled within 24 hours for a full refund.
