Lufthansa: Germany, and Europe by connection

Lufthansa connects more than 20 U.S. cities to Frankfurt and Munich, then on to almost anywhere in Europe. Here is how the two hubs differ and what the new cabins mean for you.

Two hubs, two personalities

Frankfurt is the giant: more routes, more frequencies, and longer walks. It is the default for most U.S. connections.

Munich is smaller, newer and regularly rated the more pleasant of the two. If both work for your trip, Munich is usually the calmer choice.

Allegris: Lufthansa's long-haul reset

Lufthansa is replacing every long-haul cabin with a new generation called Allegris. It is arriving aircraft by aircraft, so for now the experience depends on which plane you get.

Suites with doors

Business and First Class gain enclosed suites, some with double beds.

Pick your type of seat

Business Class has several seat styles — extra-long beds, extra space, window privacy.

Better Premium Economy

A hard-shell seat that reclines without tipping into the row behind.

Six tips for cheaper Lufthansa fares

  1. 01

Skip Light if you check a bag

Economy Light excludes checked luggage. Classic usually works out cheaper than adding a bag afterwards.

  2. 02

    Price both hubs

The same trip via Munich instead of Frankfurt can be cheaper — and easier to walk.

  3. 03

    Look at the sister airlines

SWISS via Zurich and Austrian via Vienna are sold on the same ticket and are sometimes lower.

  4. 04

    Start on United

United and Lufthansa share transatlantic flights, so a United-operated leg can be on your Lufthansa ticket.

  5. 05

    Travel in the shoulder months

March to May and September to October are noticeably cheaper than summer or Christmas markets season.

  6. 06

    Ask about phone-only fares

Our agents can sometimes access fares that do not appear online.

Is SkylineSparrow the same as Lufthansa?
No. SkylineSparrow is an independent travel agency. We help you search, compare and book Lufthansa flights, but we are not owned by or affiliated with the airline.
Should I connect in Frankfurt or Munich?
Frankfurt has more flights and destinations. Munich is smaller and usually quicker to transfer through. If both are offered at a similar price, most travellers find Munich easier.
What is Lufthansa Allegris?
The airline's new generation of long-haul cabins in every class, including suites with doors in Business and First. It is being rolled out gradually, so not every aircraft has it yet.
Does Economy Light include a checked bag?
No. Light fares include a carry-on and personal item only. Classic and Flex include a checked bag.
Which airlines are in the Lufthansa Group?
Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and others. They share the Miles & More programme and sell each other's flights.
Is Lufthansa in Star Alliance?
Yes, as a founding member. Benefits are shared with United, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines and the other members.
Is it cheaper to book Lufthansa over the phone?
Sometimes. Our travel experts can see phone-only fares and alternative routings. Call +1 (888) 356-6085 any time — we're available 24/7.
